Bert Babcock - Bookseller
(Anthology) Benet, William Rose [editor]
FIFTY POETS: An American Auto-Anthology
New York: Duffield and Green 1933. First Edition. An interesting anthology: Benet got both a selection and a comment from numerous American poets. In the preface he tells of responses - and non-responses - he got from many of them. In each case the poet's comment precedes the selection. This copy has been signed by 8 contributors: Leonora Speyer, Alfred Kreymborg, Louis Untermeyer, John Hall Wheelock, Marianne Moore, Mark Van Doren, Babette Deutsch, and Louise Bogan. Deutsch disputes a statement in her comment that [she] "would prefer to be remembered by her long EPISTLE TO PROMETHEUS" by writing underneath it: "... no longer (1965) wishes to be remembered by THE EPISTLE, nor would today choose this lyric ["Pausa" in the present anthology] for such a collection". Wheelock notes that his poem was "written during the summer of 1926" beneath his signature, and has penned in a correction in his poem "The Undiscovered Country". As interesting for the comments as for the poems, this is also a unique copy of the book. 8vo cloth. Some pages have minor soiling, and there is some light wear to the tips and the spine extremities; otherwise a very good copy, lacking the dust jacket. 8vo cloth.
