One of Wharton's four "Old New York" novelettes, this one set in the 1840's. A young man is sent by his father to Europe to obtain some paintings to enhance the family image, but the son's artistic tastes do not coincide with the father's. Small 8vo blue cloth with front- and spine-labels. Rare in the dust-jacket. Fine fresh copy in the rare flower-patterned dust-jacket with an illustration by Edward C. Caswell, who also illustrated the endpapers. The jacket is bright and unfaded, but with some shallow chipping along top front edge and spine extremities, with a small hole in the spine (of dj only). The price is unclipped.
