Boston: Little Brown & Co., 1935. Limited First Edition. Copy #553 of 600 numbered copies signed by Hilton & Illustrator Brock. This is called the "Birthday Edition". It was issued by Little, Brown one year after their first American edition. Specially bound in 8vo brown boards with a parchment-like spine printed in gold. With at least 2 film versions to memorialize the novel (Robert Donat in 1939 and a musical adaptation with Peter O'Toole as shy Arthur Chipping) this warm and somewhat sentimental novel has long been a classic, and this edition has always seemed to me to be the one to have. Some pages a bit carelessly opened, a bit of browning to endpapers, else mainly a very good copy in publisher's original slipcase box, which, although the printing on the spine of the box is a little-browned, and the box has a small stain, it is nevertheless very good also.
