Boston: Houghton MIfflin, 1887. First Edition. Hardcover. Binding "A" (no priority between the three noted bindings; but Holmes' own copy and the copy he gave his wife were in binding "A"). Original light green pictorial cloth, gilt, top edge gilt. PRESENTATION COPY SIGNED & INSCRIBED by Holmes in ink: "William Smith, Esq, With Kind regards of Oliver Wendell Holmes." Inscribee was a Yorkshire antiquary that Holmes mentions on page 301, whom he wishes he had been able to meet after receiving many of Smith's biographical and antiquarian writings over the years. This book was Holmes' charming account of his visit to England and gives a good account of the London literary and social scene. Allen & Gullans, pp. 57 et seq. Currier-Tilton, pp. 80, 92, 212-3, et seq. BAL 9006. Some inked annotations within text, else very good copy with minor edge-wear to extremities.
