New York: The Outlook Company, 1902. First Edition. The Birthday Edition. Vellum wrappers. Of a total edition of 2080 copies, this is no. 68 of only 80 limited copies SIGNED & NUMBERED by Hale and printed on imperial Japan paper. Also includes birthday invitation & A.L.S. 8vo. Stiff cream-colored, vellum wrappers. Pages roughly cut. Silk marker, with ribbon ties near fore-edge of covers. This Civil War short story was originally published in The Atlantic in December, 1863 with the intent of promoting the Union cause. It has been adapted for film several times. Also included is an original invitation & envelope to the celebration of Hale's 80th birthday at Symphony Hall in Boston, April 3, 1902; and a personal AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED, addressed from Hale to the invitee, dated June 20, 1902. Based on contents of the letter, this appears to have been a close friend of Hale's. Soft creasing/bubbling to vellum covers, but overall an amazingly well preserved copy of this rare edition. We consider it near-fine or better. With very good original slipcase that is starting to split at edges, with rubbing and wear to extremities and light soiling. A really nice copy of this author's most famous work.
