Paris: Les Editions Rieder, 1931. First Edition. Softcover. Inscribed on the half-title page "Greetings to you dear Merle Armitage/ Cordially as always/ I. Str[avinsky/ 1947." Armitage, a major graphic artist, theatre and music impresario, was indeed a good friend to Stravinsky after the Russian composer came to the U.S. Nice association, as Armitage sponsored and promoted Stravinsky's music and career after the famous Russian composer moved to California. Armitage - a book designer and graphic artist as well - wrote many books, including on Stravinsky, Gershwin and others. This French study was one of the earliest serious overviews of the composer. 121 pages, with a section of 60 illustrations plates from the composer's entire career. Merle Armitage has neatly hand-printed his ownership name across the top of the front cover. Near-fine. A nice copy, the pages are mostly uncut.
