It was originally published in 1839. Besant was a successful English novelist and historian in his day. He also wrote a couple early notable dystopian novels, THE INNER HOUSE and THE REVOLT OF MAN. Marryat was a navy officer and novelist, who was an early pioneer of nautical fiction. THE PHANTOM SHIP is a gothic novel based on the legendary ghost ship, the Flying Dutchman. Owner signature (Walter D. Jones) and date (1866) written nearly on the title page of THE PHANTOM SHIP. Very good copy. Other than a white scuff at crown of spine and some dust-soiling to page edges, a very well-preserved volume.
