London: Heinemann, 1928. First edition. Hardcover. Collection of related stories rooted in Maugham's own experiences as a member of British Intelligence during WWI. Many consider it a predecessor to the spy fiction genre later dominated by Eric Ambler and John le Carré. Basis for the 1936 film "The Secret Agent" directed by Alfred Hitchcock starring John Gielgud as Ashenden. Haycraft Queen Cornerstone and Queen's Quorum. 8vo, cloth covered boards, with gilt lettering on front panel and spine. Book is near fine with only slight lean and pinpoint wear to extremities, in a good original dust jacket with shallow chipping along edges and tears along gutters and folds. NOTE, front flap of jacket has completely separated. Despite flaws, still a scarce title with the original dust jacket, completely unrestored.
