London: Trübner & Co., 1872. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Utopian satire of Victorian society with some dystopian elements, including a section concerned with the dangers of machine consciousness and self-replicating machines. This makes Butler's work one of the earliest examples of the artificial intelligence theme in literature. Purportedly he is the first author to write about machines developing consciousness. Octavo, original bevel-edged brown cloth, stamped in black and gold, with top and fore-edges untrimmed. Solid good or better copy with some rubbing and wear at spine ends and corners. Two different owner bookplates on the front pastedown. There are some splits starting at hinges and between some of the page signatures but all pages are intact and holding firm. Very scarce.
