Bound volume of Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Volume XII, December 1855 through May 1856. Subscriber's binding. Contains the January 1856 number (No. LXVIII), which includes "January First, A.D. 3000," the Americanized comic adaptation of Émile Souvestre's Le Monde tel qu'il sera (1846). The piece reproduces illustrations from the French edition and transplants Souvestre's future world into an American satirical context, replacing his characters entirely. The volume also contains Melville's "The 'Gees" (pp. 507-509), a racial satire; two pieces by Dickens, "A Nightly Scene in London" and the opening installment of Little Dorrit (chapters 1-18, continued in subsequent volumes); and "The Story of the Whale," a lengthy illustrated article with drawings of whales, whaling instruments, and whale anatomy. 8vo, three-quarter black leather over marbled paper boards with gilt title to spine. 864 pages.

. Rubbing and minor wear to boards, spine, and edges. Occasional foxing and soiling, but the interior clean and bright overall. Very good copy.
