UNDER THE GOAD
London: Hutchinson & Co., [1926]. First Edition. Hardcover. Rare first edition of this British political thriller following protagonist Saul Wade, an illegitimate orphan whose childhood abuse and fierce ambition drive him from rural poverty through the Great War and into the world of postwar revolutionary politics. Drawn into a communist plot to overthrow the government, Saul functions less as a true believer than as a man who sees insurrection as a vehicle for personal power. An engaging and fast-moving read, despite its obscurity. Scarce and largely unknown. Note: despite some online descriptions, this is not a dystopian novel but a period political thriller rooted in the Bolshevist anxieties of interwar Britain. 8vo, olive green cloth, stamped in blind and black. Very good copy.
